If you’re looking for your blog to produce a steady stream of leads and sales passively, including evergreen content is a genius move.
Why? Because, while other styles of blog posts may eventually become outdated, evergreen blog posts typically won’t (although they may require a slight bit of tweaking from time to time).
This means that they will continue to grow in reach and popularity over time instead of dwindling away.
What Is Evergreen Content?
Just like trees or shrubs that bear the same name, evergreen blog post ideas:
- Use general blog topics that rarely change from year to year
- Can be published and rerun from time to time
- Are stable in nature, making them excellent for SEO
- Can work steadily to bring new leads / customers / sales
- Usually work well to attract beginners, giving you a longer lifetime value from those leads/sales
Basics or fundamentals of processes, or solutions often make excellent evergreen content because they rarely change. These might be how to find or get started with something. Chances are that the beginning of the process will remain the same forever. So, “how to find ____” or “how to get started with ____” make popular topics.
Recipes are great evergreen content because those same ingredients can make a dish or dessert no matter how old the recipe is.
I’ll share some specific evergreen content examples below.
What Is NOT Considered Evergreen Content?
What you do not want to choose when looking at evergreen blog content is hot topics, scientific data, medical research, technology-/software-related updates, and so forth. These subjects have a limited shelf life.
While they may be of extreme interest today, within a few weeks or months they will have most likely faded away. Statistics are always excellent to use in blog posts, with the exception of evergreen content. The reason is, they too quickly expire. Here’s an example.
While 78% of the American population used to love the television show NCIS, that started to change several years ago. An unpopular season finale, the replacement of a character, moving the show to a new time slot, or other things can quickly take a show that everybody is watching and slam dunk it into the trashcan.
When this happens, your blog post will no longer be relevant or up to date. For that reason, these types of topics don’t make good evergreen blog posts:
- Current events
- Dated information
- Fads or fashion trends
- News
- Statistics (usually)
- Anything that would likely change within the next six months to a year
You do absolutely want to have these types of posts on your blog, but evergreen posts should be your core.
Examples of Evergreen Blog Post Ideas
Precisely what types of blog post ideas make good evergreen content? Here are a few examples.
- What Is Evergreen Content and Why Do You Need It? – The definition of “evergreen content” has long been established. It is unlikely to change.
- How to Find Your First Puppy – While the thinking behind this process may change, it is unlikely to do so drastically. Dog breeds have stable personality traits, and the concept of choosing the right puppy for a particular family or lifestyle has been the same for a decade or more.
- Top 5 Fundamentals of Surfing That You Must Master for Success – People have been surfing for hundreds or years (or more). While surfing equipment and advanced surfing strategies might change on a semi-regular basis, the basics remain steadfast.
- Best Practices for Writing Your First Novel – Just as with the other evergreen content examples above, this one is unlikely to shift too much. Yes, tools, software, and other inventions for novel writers will quickly change over time, but the underlying practices for drafting a novel will not.
- How to Drop 8 Pounds in a Month – Losing weight can be done with proven strategies that have worked for decades such as eating a better diet and exercising. While there are thousands of specific takes on weight loss, focusing on the tried-and-true basics can make for an enticing evergreen blog post.
- Getting Started with Pickleball – The rules may change overtime for pickleball (or any sport) and techniques and gear might improve. But starting out almost always relies on a handful of basics.
- How to Boil an Egg – Direct. Easy. Then, later on, maybe you create a blog post that includes new options. Perhaps, 10 different ways to boil eggs without peeling them and so on.
- Starting Your Blog on a Budget – Regardless of what your blog is about, you will need fundamentals to get it up and running without spending a fortune.
What Should Be Included in Evergreen Topics?
Here are my favorite 4 things to insert into evergreen articles.
1. Keywords and Phrases – Evergreen content is a superior way to generate ongoing traffic from the search engines over time. Unlike current-event topics that die out gradually, evergreen blog posts build SEO love. Where do you put keywords and phrases?
-
- Headlines (Use an H1 tag)
- Sub-heads (Use H2 tags)
- Bullet lists
- Image ALT attributes
- Links to other posts on your blog or to other websites
- File names
- Title tag
- META description tag
- URL of post
2. Answers to Questions Asked About This Topic – Some of the most-asked questions online are by people who are just getting started with something. “How to choose the best leash for my dog,” or “How to start a blog.” The basics needed to do either of these (or thousands of other things) rarely change. Where do you find questions? AnswerThePublic.com is an excellent source (and it’s fun!).

3. Foundational Information – Continuing with our examples above, to choose a leash for your dog, you need to know what type of dog, whether s/he is a puppy or full-grown, what you will be doing with the leash (walking your dog, training your dog, etc.), and more.
If you want to start a blog, the first few things you must have are a decision about which topics you’ll write, a good understanding of your target audience, the physical setup of WordPress (or other blogging software) on your site, a URL, etc.
This makes answering these types of questions within your niche a never-ending fountain of evergreen-content ideas.
4. Affiliate Links or Links to Your Products – In order to generate continual passive income, you have to sell something. That might be an affiliate product or service or your own products or services. By seeding your posts with links (either text or display), you set up a network of passive income funnels that drives revenue to your business 24/7/365.
5. Links to Other More Detailed Blog Posts – If you have posts on more specific aspects of this topic, link to them. It could be that people read your evergreen post and have an interest in going deeper into the subject.
Do All the Posts on My Blog Need to Have Evergreen Content?
There is certainly room for other types of posts on your blog. If you’re just getting started, I suggest focusing on evergreen blog posts until you notice an uptick in traffic. Then branch out to group posts, current events, list posts, before-and-after posts and dozens of others.
When you do your content planning, make certain to specifically include several evergreen posts each year. The benefits you receive from this type of content can pay for itself over time. In addition, it’s excellent for building your subscriber base with appreciative followers who can’t wait to read what you write next!
