Like many people, I’ve put my Etsy shop on hold. Not of my own doing. Life stepped in at several different points with major events that pulled me away from my business and my Etsy shop.
So, it sat fairly dormant for quite a while. But several months ago, I put it back on my list of priorities. I have been very pleased with the results I’ve had so far, especially considering that I’m not selling on Etsy full-time.
How can you boost sales on Etsy? Let me share five strategies that have guided me to the land of more income.
1. Create Product Lines – This was a real revelation. It’s funny how this process works. Instead of adding one Christmas party banner, one set of 4th of July games and one editable resume template, fill out a full product line over time.
For example, think about what people need when they are going to host a Christmas party. Decorations, table wear, food signs, cake or cupcake toppers, etc. All of those related items create a full product line. So, instead of someone coming to your shop to purchase one Christmas party banner and leaving, they find all the other things they will need, too, and buy more!
Plus, because you now have multiple listings (in their own section) that all focus on similar, related keywords you’ll drive more traffic.
2. Test – This is a word that will make almost any product creator cringe. But it’s not hard at all and it will give you a lot of great information.
Etsy does not have an official system for creating split tests (a test for two versions of the same product listing). But all you have to do is duplicate one of your listings then change ONE of the following: title, tags, images. Do NOT change all three at the same time or you won’t know which one worked best. Let the original listing and the test listing run for a minimum of 45 days and see which one pulled in more traffic and sales.
Then you can use that information to update similar product listings so they can make more sales.
3. Improve Your Listing Description – This is another awesome section to test. Customers look to the description to answer questions they still have after viewing your mockups.
In addition to product information, there’s a lot more you can insert to increase your Etsy sales. Think about using upsells to other products, promotions (buy 2 or more and save X%), affiliate links to complementary products on Amazon, and more.
If you need help with listing copy strategies or would appreciate some copy templates, this will help.
You should also periodically go back to your older listings and check the descriptions. Do customers ask you the same questions over and over? It might serve you well to include that information in the listing.
4. Make Better Mockups – Images are vitally important on Etsy. Great images instantly capture attention and communicate what your product is about.
If your mockups could be better, I suggest you at least update the primary image that serves as the thumbnail for your product. This would make a phenomenal test, too!
Check your competition… the ones that show up high in the search results… and take notes of:
- How they created their images. Don’t copy them exactly. But observe the background colors and styles they use.
- The fonts they use. Are they easy to read? Do they use a couple of fonts or just one?
- The types of mockups they use such as product closeups, specific features, lifestyle (use in real-life settings) and so on.
5. Run a Sale – I don’t constantly put my products on sale, but I do run sales from time to time. I find it’s a great way to generate traffic from new customers. Plus, when you have a full product line to offer, it is very likely that they will purchase more than just the item that was featured in the sale.
It doesn’t have to be a huge sale. Offer a 15% - 20% discount to start with. When most shoppers see a lined-through price and a sale notice, that alone gets their attention.
There are so many other things you can tinker with in your Etsy shop to improve your sales. These are just a few I have used recently that worked for me.
