Hey Karon, People are talking about Google’s changes on Jonathan Leger’s forum this morning. I left a post referring them to your blog…hope that’s ok.
Thanks, Gail. I appreciate you doing that.
Thanks, Karon, for your clear and useful explanation. This tells me without guessing what the “semantic synonyms” are!
Glad it was helpful, Sue.
Hmmm… working on a site for client who rents apartments/houses. A good deal of his units are next to our local university. So, I’m guessing that in addition to using the well-searched term: student housing, I should also sprinkle some “college apartments,” and “student apartments” keyword phrases throughout the page as well right? Will Google rank it for the other words also or will it just use my main search term: student housing and the others will just back it up?
Yes, Debra, you’re on the right track. The whole purpose of writing semantically is to give you a better shot at appearing in the SERPs for those semantic phrases. So, yes, by sprinkling the synonyms around in the copy, you have more opportunities to show up for searches for those terms. Oh course, as I said, pay more attention to your primary keyphrase.
Excellent, Karon!
I’m new to all this copywriting stuff, but find your way of explaining things soooo helpful. I’ll be advising all my new business blogging buddies to sign up for your emails and course. They’re all professionals with not the first idea what SEO, keywords or anything else means…. semantics is just be what they need to help them avoid inadvertently keyword stuffing their posts.
Kind regards,
Linda
Thanks Linda! Glad you’ve found it helpful. How nice of you to spread the word.
I predict a synonym stuffing penalty next.
ROFL! You’re probably right!
Seems like the search engines are set to become more intelligent with every update. Thanks for such an informative post, Karon.
Yes they do. And more personalized which makes it harder to rank.
